You’re completely correct, and that’s my fault. I used travel to Pittsburgh semi-regularly, and it must be stuck in my head. I’ll go correct the post.

Look around though, I’m pretty sure CMU has a group or two, and maybe Duquesne as well. U.Pitt is large enough that it might as well. Let me know if any of those schools have groups with winter concerts, and I’ll post them here as well to make amends!

D’oh! Aw man, Chad, you beat me to it! I was in the middle of setting up a playlist to send to you for this show! We did pick 3 of the same versions, though – spiralmouth, Hyannis sound, and the amalgamates. I was gonna go with the Penn6 version of I’ll be there, as well as their “The Girl is Mine”. They also did a decent ‘Rockin Robin’, which I think was a Jackson 5 tune, but I don’t remember. And as for “I Want You Back”, I think the UMD’s Generics’ version off of ‘Will Sing for Food’ is unbeatable. Finally, the Beelzebubs do a fabulous ‘Human Nature’. I can’t wait to listen to this on my commute in to work on Monday. we’ll see how my playlist stacks up against yours.

Great song selection! My only complaint is that the show production is making the podcast very difficult to listen to, especially in the car where I do my listening nearly all of the time. The song levels are far too low and your vocal track is too hot and clipping badly. Some quick gain adjustment on the vocals, and a bit of compression and normalization on the podcast track as a whole should fix that up in a jiffy.

That being said, this is still one of the few a cappella shows being produced on a regular basis, so keep on up with it – the more the better! Thanks for all of your efforts Chad!

I wish I had a comprehensive resource. Many metropolitan areas have Yahoo Groups that you might look for. Check the CASA pages, and the web pages of any local groups, especially the collegiate groups who often hold end of year concerts in May. In the summer time its not uncommon to see semi-pro or pro groups performing at charity events or local venues. Again, those would be listed on their web site. Summer is also a good time to go to some great a cappella music festivals.

With no single calendar to explore, your best chance is to hear from other a cappella fans in your area, so make some friends over at CASA.org, and pay attention to the local resources.

I’d argue that like the Nylons, a lot of the ‘a cappella’ greats have dabbled in some sort of instrumental backing (Take 6, The Persuasions, etc.). My opinion is that as long as the vocals are still strong, it’s good. Admittedly I prefer the vocals-only approach but still enjoy all my old Nylons music (I still prefer “Up the Ladder” with vox & tamb. only).

Mark me in the “yes, please” column for more Van Canto. They have a unique and compelling sound and I’d like to hear more. Plus, it looks like it’s hard to get their stuff here in North America.

Good point Alexandre, they do! But they’ve also done some work with some excellent beatboxers and vocal percussionists lately, so maybe it’s only a matter of time before they recruit one full time? What I really meant by my statements is that before there was the art of vocal percussion as we know it, the Nylons found a way to integrate the percussion they needed. Van Canto is doing the same thing for their needs, but maybe vocal percussion will grow to do what they need too!

Hey Chad, great job with your Podcast! (I don’t know where else to post recomendations for new groups, so…) I would love for you to include something from the University of Wisconsin – Madison a cappella group Redefined. They are really great. Two of my favorite songs from them were recorded for their 2006 CD. The first is Mr. Brightside with Liam Ball on lead. I have never heard such a unique solo style taken with the song, he owns it and it is beautiful. I know Mr. Brightside is done a lot, however, if you take the time to listen to the Redefined version, it will be time well spent.

A second song from the group I love is St. Theresa (orig. Joan Osbourn) with Rachel Scheide on lead. Her voice is beautiful, especially on this song. I hope to hear something from Redefined on your podcast, they always produce quality work.

I’m a big fan of the Acapodcast for awhile now (since episodes in the 20s), and today I was excited to introduce someone else to the podcast.

I’ve been working a gig at a high school outside of Hartford, CT along with one of our dealer reps. We got to talking about a cappella music (and I thought “Awesome, finally!”), and I mentioned the Acapodcast featuring Chad Bergeron.

Lo and behold, our rep not only knew of one Chad Bergeron, but had went to high school with him. So Chad, Joe Gates says hello, and is now a fan of the show.

Wow! I stumbled into your podcast after a casual mention by Brian Ibbot in Coverville and boy am I glad I decided to look you up. Every episode has been stunning with fresh and exciting tracks that I frankly could never hear any other way up here in Wisconsin. Keep up the good work, you have a subscriber for life.

Suggestion for show #50 – can you please find an a cappella cover of ‘Killing Me Softly’ done by Lauryn Hill without the rap and “uh huh uh huh” crap stuff all over it? She’s got such a stunning voice I’d love to hear her sing without the Fugees messing up Roberta Flack’s masterpiece. Barring a Lauryn Hill cover, can you get a ‘Killing Me Softly’ a cappella cover by any other female vocalist?

Hi Chad.
I’m relatively new to your podcasts and have nearly caught up with all the casts – I’m at least up to 2008! I wanted to say congratulations on such an excellent show.
I have a suggestion for you, the Halloween episode got me thinking: if there are so many recordings of particular songs, such as Lion Sleeps Tonight for instance, perhaps do an episode that is ONLY versions of that song by different artists. It could be really interesting to be able to compare the different interpretations – a bit like with the Olympics being able to compare the divers… you sort of become an armchair expert after seeing the same dive a few times. With hearing the same song a few times we could become iPod experts of the different ways acts interpret a song!
As an experiment it might be a fun thing to try.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to catching up with your current show very soon.

Loved it. I was glad to finally hear some good jewish a capella. One thing to let you know about – the group “SHIRcago” – their name is, in fact, a pun. The hebrew word “shir” (pronounced ’shear’) means song. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for all your hard work!

I agree, the song was originally done by someone else, but the version here is a cover of the song as done by No Doubt. A cover of a cover, perhaps, but Faux Paz was attempting to do the song in the style No Doubt did it in.

There´s no doubt its from Talk Talk, a UK-Band from the early eigthies, the song was written their lead singer Mark Hollis and Tim Freese-Greene.

I really liked this episode in general — it’s fun to hear the songs, because they are so popular and fun. That’s why they’re overdone, I guess.

The “In Your Eyes” and “Kiss from a Rose” covers were a bit weak, but those songs are *SO HARD* to do, because the vocals have become so ingrained into our collective head, so any missed note or inflection stands out a lot.

Probably my favorite episode. I’ve been listening since around Episode 20, and this one just has so many good songs.

I am not a singer, but A Cappella music has some of the best sounds to ever cross my ears.

Personally, it is these contemporary songs that I like most about A Cappella; while you avid singers may not enjoy them as much as your original music, it is the fact that I recognize music of today and hear the instrumentation of the human voice that make it most enjoyable.

Don’t be so quick to assume “everyone” has heard these songs Mr. Bergeron. Some of us want to hear these pop hits done by excellent voices, and I hope you will continue to put at least one in every episode.

“She Blinded Me With Science” – There are too many a cappella remakes of this Thomas Dolby tune, although I actually really like the ones by Toxic Audio and the Coats.

“Stand By Me” – Sing far away from me!

“Rosanna” – Meet you NONE of the way!

“My Girl” – No sarcastic quip here – PLEASE just shut up.

Thanks for this episode. I ‘recently’ (about a year ago) discovered contemporary (high school / college) a capella .. but have been a fan of The Persuasions for years and years.

I had no idea that Jerry Lawson had left the group.

Shortly after listening to this episode I ordered (and received) the new Jerry Lawson / Talk of the Town CD and it’s great.

I don’t think Utah counts as ‘Midwest’… unless you think of ‘everything between New York and California’ as ‘Midwest.’

Out here in the West, we all think that everything East of the Mizzipi is one big state. Added all together you’re ’bout the size of one of us REAL states, anyway.

I first came to your podcast after listening to an episode from Coverville, featuring a cappella cover songs. Did a search and your podcast showed up. I have been a loyal listener since then. It saddens me that you will be missing out on hundreds of new listeners who are curious about the music, and miss the joy of listening to pure voices creating music. There are a very few free podcast that is dedicated to a cappella and losing you to paid subscription will make that list even smaller. Whatever your decision is, I can only wish you the very best and thank you for providing an incredible show.

As one of the owners of acaTunes, I just wanted to state…

Any issues related to the content (or frequency of publication) of “the other a cappella podcast” are completely out of the control of acaTunes. We are merely the publishing medium for that podcast. In order to improve the frequency of episodes, acaTunes has even taken on the creation of one of the three episodes each month (I’ve done two so far).

You’ll find that those issues are tied only to that podcast and not to our newest video-podcast (vodcast): Wes Carroll on Drums (instructional mouthdrumming vodcast).

Think of a paid-vodcast as being an interactive show. With Wes Carroll’s vodcast, we now have a Forum online where you can post comments, questions, discussions about the vodcast topic. Wes is very ready to sculpt the episodes to meet the desires of the subscribers. You can send in video clips and he’ll discuss them in an episode, etc. Like your own video-lesson. You’re not going to get that on a radio show or free iTunes vodcast.

Forgot to add–since I jumped in late in the game, I hadn’t noticed that the other guys bailed on their podcast after moving to subscription. I hadn’t thought of that possibility, and that revelation makes it even less likely that I’d pay for a podcast. You strike me as much more likely to follow through with things (yes, I know, psychoanalysis via your podcast is notoriously imprecise…), but still, life happens and there is a (probably small) chance that you’d be forced to give it up.

Listening to the podcast now, heard the news about AcaTunes, I’ve got several thoughts about it, in no particular organization:

1. I imagine it’s a bit better for you financially. In that I mean you’re paying licensing fees now, and I suspect AcaTunes handles that nicely. There may be profit as well in it, but I doubt that’s a primary concern of yours. Nothing wrong with making a buck, though.

2. After hearing a couple of other acappella podcasts [that eventually moved themselves], you’re clearly the most professional, the one I don’t cringe listening to. So if anyone can, I suppose you can.

3. I don’t know if I’m a typical listener, but I doubt I’ll be following you over if you’re moving to pay. I might pay for albums, but I don’t for podcasts. I enjoy the genre, but I’m not a current practitioner.

4. I could be wrong, because on the face of it AcaTunes looks really well run, but–it seems like if you’re looking to increase the amount of acappella aficionados (and that does seem the goal of the founder of CASA, etc. based on an interview on one of Those Other Podcasts), you don’t want to wall this music off behind a paid subscription.

5. If you want more audience, what’s wrong with ITunes? I assume something is, or else there wouldn’t be eMusic, etc. out there. Then what’s wrong with them? Maybe there’s a ton of genre-specific sites out there, and I’m wrong. It just seems that being insular doesn’t spread the word.

Just as a note: one of my favorite podcasts is Coverville. I don’t know what ASCAP licensing is for podcasters, but he’s swinging it. Maybe he’s taking a loss here, but what I’m getting at is that he’s gotta pay them too and manages. If it went to paid, I doubt I’d continue there, either.

I suspect there’s a really hard sell going on here. Either there’s some arm-twisting going on (which is what I suspected for your, ah, counterparts since it’s presumed they skipped the licensing thing based on what they were saying), or there’s just an “offer you can’t refuse” (in this case, access to tons more music, and less hassles on the licensing). With you I’m thinking it’s more the latter. Not that a hard sell is bad, either–just that it’s weird everyone’s scrambling for the AcaTunes.

Anyway–and I really should have started with this–great show. I’ve enjoyed it, and was pleasantly surprised at how well it was produced. If this is it, thanks at least for the seven shows I grabbed a couple of weeks ago when I found the show.

I’d second Jacob’s comment. I was subscribed to that other podcast as well, and ended up withdrawing from the subscription also. I understand that you’ve put in a lot of work, and your podcast definitely is up there with my favorites, but I’d be unlikely to subscribe as well. I completely understand wanting to go to that model, both for the income and the protection from copyright violations, though. If so, thanks for the episodes you have shared to this point.

I’m curious how much, if any, benefit the groups you featured have experienced as a result of the exposure. If there was any, clearly reducing your audience by going to the subscription model will affect that, but life is full of tradeoffs.

I’m sad to hear that the Acapodcast is apparently going to a paid subscription model. Although it is quality content that I am willing to pay for, I have still not recovered from feeling tremendously ripped off by “the other a cappella podcast,” which promised to provide a specific amount of episodes (but didn’t), and then promised that it would get caught up with the original promise, and then just fell further and further behind, ultimately taking a lot of money in exchange for… nothing. I have cancelled my subscription to that one.

If “the other podcast” were a larger operation, I sincerely think that “the other host” would be facing a class action lawsuit by now. Although I’m not saying Chad is necessarily the same way, I will not be subscribing to any paid podcasts unless they provide a very specific minimum publishing schedule, and a very specific refund policy if they don’t keep up with the schedule. I guess that sounds pretty harsh, but if you want people to pay for something, you have to expect to be held to a much higher standard.

Hi Chad!

I love the show! My one problem is with the volume differences between you talking and the music. I find myself having to push my speakers all the way to the top volume and strain to hear when you’re speaking, and quickly bring the volume way down as soon as a song starts. Not sure what the issue is there, maybe you’re just not sitting close enough to the mic or something. (is there a “normalize volume” function in the software or something?)

Other than that, I’m loving it! Keep it up! =)

I definitely love this podcast! I’ve only listened to about the first half of it, but I already am thoroughly enjoying all the nice a cappella music! Also, you’ve got a rather smooth voice there, Chris. Maybe you should demonstrate a little a cappella yourself? I mean you must have already been listening to A LOT of this music if you’re willing to put out a podcast so I was thinking it’d be really cool if you would perhaps play some clips that would either help those of us who want to maybe try our hands at a little recreational a cappella.

I agree with Mona’s comment. Thanks for maintaining my habit. I’m a friend of Kevin Weist of the Groovebarbers/Lemmings and former director of the Williams Octet. I also direct a group here in DC that is really just a hobby for former a cappella-ists who are now rapidly graying parents. In a future Acapodcast you should try to play something of the Lemmings.

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve been tuning in — you run a great show in my favorite genre of music – acappella. I’m an acappella singer myself. I’m in an award winning sweet adelines chorus, and I sing in a barbershop quartet – though we are not nearly good enough to have a CD.

I’m a sucker for great harmonies. Thank you for being the harmony dealer for this addict.

Dude, I just found your podcast, and I must say: yippey!. I thougt we were the only acapella podcast out there.
True, we don’t play acapella all the time, but we are an acapella group and we do have a podcast. And we do sing most podcasts.
