The A Cappella comunity is one of the best communities I can think of. Our shared passion brings people from around the globe into near instant friendships. Yesterday, it was announced that Boston vocal rock band Ball In The House would be cancelling Saturday’s scheduled show (two days later) because of a sudden and sad death in the family of one of the members.

One day later, it has been announced that Boston’s other outstanding vocal rock band, Five O’clock Shadow, would be stepping up to the plate and covering the gig for them.

That’s just one of the nicest, coolest things I’ve heard in a while. I’m sad to hear of the death, and I’m sad for those attendees who were looking forward to seeing BitH, but at least they’re still getting a rocking show with FOCS.

I love this community.

I’ve just been tipped off to what promises to be one amazing concert this Saturday night at 8pm, in Arden Delaware. It will feature four different groups from four different schools, including:

The Del-Tones from University of Delaware
Off The Beat from University of Pennsylvania
The Deaftones from Westminster Choir College
Tigertones from Princeton University

And even better? The price – only $15, which is what you might expect to pay for just one group’s end-of-semester show.

If anyone goes, send me pictures from the event and I’ll send you an Acapodcast sticker.

More details at http://ardenclub.org/concerts.htm

The best line from the review? When they tell everyone who listened to the (oh so disappointing) Ben Folds acappella album that they should listen to SWM,V2 to cleanse their ears and find out what acappella is -supposed- to be.

Dave and Christopher put me to shame again….

Now HERE’S a show that promises to be one to pay attention to! Jerry Lawson (formerly of The Persuasions) along with Sean Altman (formerly of Rockapella) and the rest of The GrooveBarbers will be together on one stage. Jerry and Sean are long time friends, and they’ve decided to sing together in the city that gave rise to both of their careers (New York City). On Saturday, September 19th, at 8pm, they’ll be performing together at The Bitter End Club, where The Persuasions launched their career. It’s a very small venue, only seating about 150 people, so this is almost guaranteed to be a sold out show. The Bitter End (http://www.bitterend.com) is located at 147 Bleeker Street (of Simon and Garfunkel fame), right in the heart of The Village (New York’s infamous cultural region). The best part? Tickets are an incredibly cheap $25 each. They could easily sell for twice that. Do yourself a favor and call The Bitter End or go to their web site, and order tickets now….

Brian Ibbott over at Coverville ( The all-covers podcast. Including a cappella covers.) received a meme that he sent my way, about posting the sixth photo on the sixth page of your Flickr photo stream. I’m using Picasa instead, but in the spirit, I dug up a music related picture to share with you.

The music geeks in the audience will recognize it as an Alto (or C) clef. For those of you only passingly familiar with sheet music, most sheet music is written in Treble and Bass (or G and F if you prefer) clefs. The Alto clef was a lot more popular in early printed music (here I show my Nerd Credentials), and unlike the other clefs, isn’t as fixed in place. It can be slid up and down the staff, and whatever line it centers on is middle C. You can see why that’d be really popular in the days of woodblock printing: a simple way to fit everything on the staff without actually transposing anything!

To give some context to the picture, I was on Santorini (Thera) recently as part of my honeymoon cruise around the Mediterranean, and passed a house with this as part of the fence out front. The other parts were the Treble and Bass clefs, of course! Each was a single bar of music. Neat fence, no?

Unlike Brian, I won’t be passing this on to five specific people (Why five Brian, shouldn’t it be six?), but I invite all of you to link to music related pictures in the comments below, and to post this meme on your own blogs if you like.

The summit starts tonight, and goes all weekend long. I’m including the ‘radio’ ads for the summit, because they’re fun commercials.

Hey all you Acapodcast fans, your host here. I was going to have a show out tomorrow, the regular Thursday night, but I’m knocked out right now by a cold I think I picked up at last weekend’s Superbowl party. (American Football Championship for the international crowd) So I’ll push that out this coming weekend. But that means I’m not going to be able to tell you on the air about some scheduled downtime coming up. Starting Friday night, and going until about midday Saturday (depending on what time zone you are in), the Acapodcast will be undergoing a server migration, and will be offline. No website, no show feed, and e-mails will be queued up during that time.

Don’t worry, this is all a good thing, ultimately.

Peace,

Chad Bergeron

I’d like to apologize to all the listeners of Episode 12 for the apparent technical difficults towards the end of the show. I’d like to make a big apology to APC Rhythm, because it seems like a large chunk of their track was lost to silence. I’d also like to apologize for the sudden loss of volume from my microphone, and the unfortunately large jump back at the last track. I turned my speakers up to compensate and nearly blew my head off with the return to normal.

I’m going to see if I can salvage this episode or re-record it, but it’ll be a few days before I can sit down and do that.

[Edit: The new recording is posted]

Well, in a fit of pique, I've overhauled The Acapodcast Website! Be sure to let me know what you think. In addition to the visual face lift, there's some new behind the scenes parts. It ought to make it easier for me to put up new information here. For starters, there is a new arrangement to the sidebar on the right, including a link to a contact form . It's probably the easiest way to send me a message. A few sharp eyed listeners have used it already !

Secondly, There's also a new calendar of events over there, where I will post concerts, competitions, and other dates of relevance to the A Cappella world. Please, please send me any events you would like to have listed there! Also send me links to be considered for inclusion in the new sidebar.

I would like to get a logo made for the show, so if you are an artist, or know an artist, drop me a line.

Let me know what else you would like to get from the website, and from the podcast. I'm always open to new ideas and suggestions.

-Chad Bergeron

Just in time for me to start putting this week’s show together…

Last week my iPod died. I had a 40GB black and white model that I sent back to apple twice for hard drive failures, both times under warrantee. And now it has gone a third time, but outside of the window of opportunity. Am I cursed? It doesn’t directly impact my ability to produce The Acapodcast, so that’ll still be going out as usual, but it does mean I won’t be able to review my work on during my commute.

I wouldn’t normally do this, but I’ve gone ahead and put a PayPal donation button in the sidebar, if anyone would like to donate towards replacing the iPod. As I’ve stated before, I don’t make money on The Acapodcast. It actually costs me quite a deal. Any funds I do receive (less than a dollar a month at this point) I roll right back into the show, to cover hosting fees, or CD purchases, or gear, etc. So thank you for any generosity you’ve shown, even if it was a kind word by e-mail. (Especially if it is a kind word… knowing that what I’m doing is appreciated means more than money)

Humbly,

-Chad

After being on hiatus for several months, the Acapodcast is back! We’ve got some new gear, some new groups, and some new setups (like this shiny new URL)! I hope to have some more good news in just a little bit. First, my thanks to Kevin Williams, who started the Acapodcast, and got things going. I was looking to get involved in an A Cappella themed podcast right around the time he started it up, and he graciously let me get my feet wet with him a little bit. He also graciously turned the Acapodcast over to me when in a fit of New Year enthusiasm I decided to revive it. I’d also like to thank the many artists who have appeared on past episodes of the Acapodcast, and to the many groups that have agreed to let me play their music. We’ve got a lot of kick butt music coming your way! If you are a group that would like to be featured in the Acapodcast, please e-mail me at chad (at) acapodcast.com. And for all you listeners, feedback is always welcome.
